Who can apply?
We consider every applicant age 18 and up. VE does not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, sexual orientation or gender. There is no maximum age to participate in our programs.
What is the application process?
First, download, fill out and send back the application form to apply@ve-global.org. Also include your resume or CV, one signed letter of recommendation and the contact information of three persons of reference. Once we receive your application, we proceed to a competitive selection process which enables us to ensure the safety of the children we serve. This process normally takes between 4 and 6 weeks for the Intensive Experience. You will then be requested to meet one of our former or current volunteers for an interview. In some cases, the interview can also take place over the phone, using Skype when necessary. Once accepted, you’ll begin receiving information on how to plan your trip and what you should expect from the VE experience.
Do I have to pay a fee to participate in VE Global’s program?
VE Global does not charge any application or program fees. However, you are responsible for all of your personal expenses. These include housing, food, transportation, travel, recreation, toothpaste, empanadas…
What are the basic requirements to work with VE Global?
Aside from the minimum requirement being 18 years of age and have the ability to speak English or Spanish at an intermediate level or higher, previous volunteers have exhibited an array of characteristics ranging from creativity, a caring demeanor and the ability to work well within a team. Each of these traits contributes not only to the diversity of the organization, but also to the success of its programming. Below are the requirements for our different programs.
Intensive Experience
1. Minimum stay of 3 months
2. Arrive for one of the March, June, September or December classes
3. Intermediate level(s) of Spanish and/or English
4. Participation in the Orientation week
5. Participation in the Jornada weekend retreat
6. Attendance of bi-weekly general and committee meetings
7. Involvement in a VE committee (10hrs/week)
8. Full time involvement in an institution (Approximately 30 hrs/wk)
9. Welcoming in the next class of volunteers by assisting with their Orientation!
PLEASE NOTE-- This year VE Global will be changing the minimum stay requirement and volunteer class schedule. Starting with the class of September 2010, volunteers must commit to a stay of at least four months. As such, our class schedule will work on a trimester system, with incoming volunteer classes in September, January, and May.
Part-time Experience
1. Application in Spanish
2. Minimum commitment of 6 months
3. A recommended 3 to 5 hours a week in an institution; part-time volunteers’ schedules, however, are contingent on their specific projects.
What language(s) do I have to speak and at which level?
Most of our volunteers speak English and have at least an intermediate level of Spanish. Since you will be in contact with Chilean children almost every day, you will need to quickly learn Spanish or improve your Spanish abilities. If you have a low level of Spanish, we will ask you to take a Spanish class for 30 hours. English is not mandatory if you already speak Spanish.
Does VE Global accept couples?
Yes. However, each application is considered independent of the other, and should be completed individually. If you want to come with your partner, please indicate it in your application form.
