“My goal was to create a space that seemed like a “real exhibition” that allowed both kids and adults to enjoy.” – Victoria Hayward
When the volunteer coordinator at VE Global asked me to be in charge of Festival de Arte I was ecstatic! I immediately started to devise plans as to how I was going to organize the event as well as different art workshops I could do with the kids. During Festival de Arte I had the pleasure of both working in the office and working directly in Hogar San Francisco. In college I graduated with a degree in Art and also worked as an art appraiser and assistant curator for galleries, so this event was right up my alley. I was determined to make this the best Festival de Arte ever. My goal was to create a space that seemed like a “real exhibition” that allowed both kids and adults to enjoy.
Collecting the art from all the different organizations was one of my favorites parts, I had the honor in seeing all the art before the big day. Setting up the exhibition was by far the most fun. I watched what I once knew as a room we had meetings in, slowly being converted to a legitimate gallery!
I arrived to start setting up at 8:30 in the morning and set up until the last minute making sure everything was perfect and all the pieces were aligned and hung correctly. Finally the moment came and our guests started to arrive. I loved hearing chatter amongst the adults as they gazed at the art, making comments such as, “Ella sola tiene 8 años y lo hizo este!”
As proud as I could have been with how the show turned out, without a doubt I could not have done it without the amazing team of volunteers we have, and most importantly all the amazing kids that we have the opportunity to work with. Festival de Arte was definitely one of my highlights at VE Global and I was so happy to hear from several “antiguos” that it was the best Festival yet.
