You Can Be The Change

I arrived in Chile from Peru with the idea of having a better quality of life. However, my experience has been much more than that after having known VE Global. I joined VE Global a bit more than four years ago. Nevertheless, my first contact with them was six years ago, when I met two former volunteers from Domingo Savio, but for reasons that I do not really remember, it was not possible for me to join VE Global at that point. After a couple of years though, I felt the need to give back to society and I remembered this organization and I decided to contact them again, and this time, finally I could join VE Global and become a volunteer.

Being a VE volunteer has been one of the most important experiences in my life. I can divide my experience in two fields: Recovery of belief in change and Personal growth.

I have met many VE volunteers, coming from all over the world, and all of them have the same in common: they believe that social changes are possible and that our actions, even the small ones, will be helping to achieve them. I had lost this conviction but being surrounded in this new big energy made me recover it. Also, it gave renewed energy to carry out my personal goals.

The best of all my experience with VE Global was without a doubt the work with kids, doing different things from attending to Repair Days, in order to improve a bit their quality of life, to playing a football match in the Liga de Deportes. Although sometimes my job as volunteer was tiring, at the end, the reward is much bigger. There is nothing more rewarding than hearing a “gracias tío”, seeing a smile or even just having the feeling of knowing that you have done something for them.

From all the kids whom I have met in these four years, I always remember Julia*. Since I first met Julia, she was very interested in learning English. Now, after having finished high school and with a little help of volunteers, she is studying English at college. I am very happy for having been witness of this achievement.

*Name has been changed.

Dennis volunteered with VE Global for four years.
