Board of Directors

 

VEGlobal has a Board of Directors in the United States and is in the process of forming one in Chile. The board serves a governing role in the organization to ensure the realization of our mission. VEGlobal recently formed a Board of Advisors to aid in strategic planning, development of resources and augmentation of the current Board of Directors.

Board of Directors USA:

President – Jonah Berman; Assistant Director, Winston Center for Leadership and Ethics
Jonah served as a VE volunteer from December 2005 through April 2006 in the Casa de Guaguas. He joined the board of directors upon returning back to the U.S. in May of 2006, and was appointed board president in March of 2008. Jonah has extensive non-profit experience in both development and program management, having worked for a variety of agencies including Action for Children in Chicago, IL, United Way of Massachusetts Bay in Boston, MA, and SFJAZZ in San Francisco, CA. Currently, he works as the Assistant Director of the Winston Center for Leadership and Ethics at Boston College in Chestnut Hill, MA. Jonah holds a bachelor of arts in sociology and a bachelor of music in jazz performance, saxophone, from the Oberlin College and Conservatory of Music in Oberlin, Ohio. He is currently pursuing his Masters in Business Administration at the Carroll School of Management at Boston College on a part-time basis.

Vice-President – Jen Hendlisz; Recruitment Consultant, Bombardier Aerospace.
Jen served as a VE Global volunteer from March to August of 2004 at Hogar Esperanza. Since then she has remained very involved with Chile in a variety of capacities. She helped create Voluntarios de la Esperanza (now VE Global) and has served as both Treasurer of the Board of Directors and Vice-President, the title she currently holds. She helps to recruit all new volunteers to the organization by reviewing applications and conducting interviews. Jen also returned to Chile in 2006 to collect data on her Masters thesis, which was based on VE Global’s volunteer selection process. Jen holds a Bachelor of Commerce from McGill University and an MSc in Human Resources from HEC Montreal. She currently works in Human Resources at Bombardier Aerospace.

Secretary – Ilana Osten DPT; Physical Therapist, John A. Coleman School/Elizabeth Seton Pediatric Center.
Ilana volunteered at Hogar Esperanza in 2004 and was so marked by her experiences that she helped in creating the foundations for the creation of VEGlobal. She is currently serving her second term as Secretary of the US Board of Directors of VEGlobal and remains involved in the creation and implementation of the volunteer application process. In her spare time, Ilana is a pediatric physical therapist. She earned her BSc in Physical Therapy at McGill University in 2003 and her doctorate of Physical Therapy at New York University in 2006.

Treasurer – Lauren Andrews; Partnership Manager, iMentor Interactive, iMentor.
Lauren spent a year and half in Chile with VEGlobal in 2006-2007 as a volunteer and Director of Development and Public Relations. Prior to that, she received her B.A. in English from New York’s Binghamton University and worked as a government grant writer and program developer for YAI/National Institute for People with Disabilities. She is currently working on iMentor’s national initiative, iMentor Interactive. She develops partnerships with organizations to expand the use of iMentor Interactive’s innovative web-based social networking platform designed specifically for managing mentoring programs and peer-to-peer networks.

Greg Llacer; Director of Post-Doctoral Affairs, Harvard University
In October 2006, Greg was named Director of the Office for Postdoctoral Affairs. An Associate of Leverett House and a member of the Harvard College Board of Freshman Advisers, Mr. Llacer also directs the Harvard College Program for Research in Science and Engineering (PRISE). Mr. Llacer formerly was an assistant director of fellowships in the Office of Career Services (OCS) and director of the Herchel Smith Harvard Research and Michael C. Rockefeller Memorial Fellowship Programs. Greg previously managed educational initiatives for the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology (HST). At HST Greg administered educational enrichment programs for biomedical engineering and medical school students, advised students, postdocs, and faculty on the development of learning science modules in course materials (including a new biomedical ethics curriculum), and oversaw the NSF-supported VaNTH Engineering Research Center. Prior to his work at HST, Greg spent 17 years on the staff of the Office of Graduate Studies and Research at the University of California, San Diego, where he was the senior research analyst for the Vice Chancellor for Research. Greg’s undergraduate and master’s course work at UCSD and San Diego State University specialized in the areas of cross-cultural education and language policy. Greg first participated as a member of the VE Global Board of Advisors as of October 2007 and later joined the Board of Directors in June 2008.

Stratton Lloyd; Vice President, Medical Market Development, EBSCO Publishing
Stratton spent several years in Chile during the 90’s, where he and a friend founded a non-profit organization in the north. They eventually transferred the organization, now First Look Inc., to Birmingham, Alabama. First Look promotes volunteering and organizes youth involvement in the community. Stratton attended Yale University as an undergraduate and received an MBA from Harvard Business School. He has advised VE Global strategic planning as a member of the advisory board since October 2007 and later joined the Board of Directors in June 2008.

Luke Winston; Harvard Kennedy School and Harvard Business School, Class of 2011 Candidate
Luke was a co-founder and the first Executive Director of VE Global.

Board of Advisors:

Tom Gavin; CEO, Eze Castle Software
Tom has been with Eze Castle Software (ECS) since 1998, having joined from Treacy & Company, a boutique management consulting and principal investment firm in Boston. Tom was named Chief Executive Officer of ECS in 2005. Prior to being named CEO, Tom served as Chief Operating Officer of ECS, managing nearly all aspects of the company’s day-to-day operations and strategic planning. Tom holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Harvard University and was recently named one of the Top 40 Under 40 in Boston.

Steve Reifenberg; Program Director, Harvard University David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies (DRCLAS) Chile Regional Office
As the Regional Office Program Director of the Chile Office, Steve manages all activities and operations of the DRCLAS Office in Santiago, Chile. Prior to moving to Chile, he was DRCLAS’s Executive Director in Cambridge, MA from 1996 - 2002. Steve is the former Program Director for Latin America of the Conflict Management Group (CMG), an international non-profit organization created from the Harvard Negotiation Project at the Harvard Law School. He served as the Director of the Edward S. Mason Program in Public Policy and Management, jointly administered by the Kennedy School of Government and the Harvard Institute for International Development from 1990 to 1993. Steve is a graduate of the John F. Kennedy School of Government where he earned a Master in Public Policy. He also holds a Master in Print Journalism from Boston University and a B.A. in Philosophy from the University of Notre Dame. Steve lived in a Chilean children’s shelter, from 1982-1984, called Hogar Domingo Savio. The shelter recently changed strategies to become a community center, which is currently served by VEGlobal volunteers. Steve recently published a book of his experience in Chile, Santiago’s Children, which will be released in April 2008.

Jane Winslow; Director, Latin America Equity Sales, Merrill Lynch
Jane is a Director on the Latin American Institutional Equity Sales Desk at Merrill Lynch. She joined Merrill Lynch in 1998, initially based in Chile, where she resided for thirteen years, and was Institutional Investor’s #1 - ranked equity research analyst for Chile. She held similar positions at Bankers Trust and HSBC, based in New York and Santiago, Chile. Prior to her career in the Latin American markets, she did research at the World Bank and at the UN’s Food and Agricultural Organization, in Rome. Jane holds a BA in Economics from Denison University; an MS in Agricultural and Resource Economics from Ohio State University; and an MBA from Stanford University.
